“Water in downtown Des Moines has risen quite a bit since my last trip. Bridges are just above water. Levees are getting wet. It’s going to be close.”
“Des Moines officials have recommended that residents and businesses evacuate the downtown area, as well as some other areas in the 500-year flood plain, by 6 p.m. today.
Rising river levels prompted the recommendation. The Des Moines River is expected to crest downtown even earlier than had been thought, as early as 8 p.m. tonight.
In a special news conference held shortly after an 11 a.m. meeting, Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie announced the call for voluntary evacuation of the 500-year flood plain.”
